ABORTION ● POST-ABORTION
After an abortion |
If you or someone you know is hurting from an abortion experience, you are not alone... The unwanted pregnancy and subsequent abortion may be far behind you, but memories of that experience are still with you. Perhaps you are feeling anxious, sad, having trouble sleeping, or find yourself dependent on drugs or alcohol. Are you alone in your turmoil? No. In fact, health care professionals across the country have identified many women with such symptoms.1,2,3,4,5 Some researchers have labeled this experience as a form of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) called post abortion syndrome (PAS).5 Recent research suggests that abortion can, in fact, be responsible for a profound array of long-term emotional disturbances in a woman's life.1,2,3,4,5 PAS is the term being used to describe a woman's inability to: • Process the fear, anger, sadness and guilt surrounding her abortion experience • Grieve the loss of her baby • Come to peace with herself and others involved in the abortion decision |

How a support group can help |
Feelings of relief and denial are common emotional reactions following an abortion. Abortion promises to relieve anxieties related to an unplanned pregnancy. Abortion keeps this promise only to leave behind a whole new set of burdens. Denial can prevents post-abortal woman from connecting her present problems to the abortion event in her past.
CPC offers a program for women to begin to heal from past-abortions. Healing of Post-Abortion Emotions (H.O.P.E.) is an in-depth study consisting of groups ranging in size from 3-7 women and 2 leaders. H.O.P.E. volunteers have personally experienced abortion. They truly understand the confusion, emptiness, and heartache that so often follow.
